The u3a is a global movement dedicated to lifelong learning, social connection, and personal fulfillment for those in their third age. Originally founded in France in 1973 as a formal university outreach program, the movement arrived in the UK in 1982 and evolved into something unique. Here, the focus shifted away from traditional classrooms toward a self-help model where members share their own skills and passions in a relaxed, social environment.
Beyond simply acquiring new knowledge, the u3a plays a vital role in combating social isolation and fostering mental and physical wellbeing. By participating in diverse interest groups, members find renewed purpose, forge lasting friendships, and stay active within their local communities. Whether it is mastering a new language, exploring local history, or participating in walking groups, the emphasis is always on learning for the sheer joy of it. The core philosophy of the UK movement is summed up in three simple words: learn, laugh, live. It is a testament to the idea that retirement is not a period of slowing down, but a vibrant opportunity for growth and discovery.
